So, here’s the scenario. We were going a bit stir crazy being locked up inside during this pandemic. When Governor Janet Mills announced the opening of campgrounds we said, “hey, why not?”
We have a 2016 Ford Expedition XL Limited with the max tow capacity (9,200lbs) and decided we’d look for a camper that we could tow with our existing vehicle.
I spent weeks looking at new and used units and we ultimately decided to purchase a 2012 Wildwood 28DBUD. The folks we purchased it from were incredibly sweet and the original owners. The camper was well cared for and we thought it would be perfect for our first venture into owning a travel trailer. Camping with a soon to be 3 year old, we knew we wanted bunks and our hope was to bring grandparents with us occasionally as well. So, sleeping 9 was a big plus!
After getting it home, we brought it to Coastal RV in Topsham, Maine. John is top-notch. Seriously, if you’re in the area and need parts or service I cannot recommend him enough. He ran the camper through the shop, performed some regular maintenance on the camper and adjusted our weight distribution hitch for the Expedition. We were ready to go!

Why buy used?
Listen, we have no idea what we’re looking at or what we’re doing. We just knew we needed to get outside and enjoy what Maine had to offer during a challenging year. We loved the price tag on the camper and figured it was a safe bet to buy used not knowing if we’d want to make this a long-time hobby. We’re weekend warriors, we’re not living in it full-time, so we didn’t have a long list of ‘must-haves’ when buying. We loved that it had a large dinette, a big slide and bunks. That was our criteria, and it checked all the boxes.
